History back to top

In 1964, Mary Kellogg and Rhoda Kellogg Norman opened Maple Street Book Shop at 7527 Maple Street. Maple Street specialized in selling paperback books.

In 1970, Rhoda Faust bought the shop from her mother, Mary. Over thirty years, the shop expanded in partnership with some of New Orleans’ finest booksellers to multiple locations across the greater New Orleans area. At one time, Maple Street included the Maple Street Children’s Book Shop (in partnership with Cindy Dike), a Westbank location (with John Dike), a shop at Uptown Square (with Mark Zumpy), in the Garden District (with Britton Trice), and a store in Old Metairie.

By the early 2000’s, the store had contracted back to just the two shops uptown: the original location and Maple Street Children’s Book Shop, next door at 7529 Maple Street.

In 2007, the Maple Street Children’s Book Shop closed with the opening on St. Charles Ave of big-box book-retailer Borders.

That same year, Rhoda sold her shop to Donna Allen. Donna hired former Children’s Shop owner Cindy Dike as the children’s book buyer and brought in longtime customer, Gladin Scott, to manage the store. Donna leased both buildings uptown. New books (for both grown-ups and children), were moved into the former Children’s Shop (the bigger of the two buildings), while the smaller building, the original location, housed Maple Street’s recently acquired used inventory. Donna expanded with a store in Bayou St. John and another in the Marigny at the Healing Center. but as a function of decreased sales and decreased funds, the shop’s footprint shrunk again in 2013.

Gladin took over ownership in the summer of 2013 and to keep Maple Street going, he consolidated the uptown shops’ inventories into one building: the store’s current location at 7529 Maple Street.
